What is YES!

YES! stands for Youth-related Ethics in Sports and aims to fulfill the right of youth (all individuals aged 18 years and below) to a safe and enjoyable sporting experience, allowing him or her to grow and develop in sport.

The foundation of YES! is based on some of the guiding principles of The Convention on the Rights of the Child which was first adopted by the United Nations in 1989.

Rationale behind YES!

A youth has the right to grow in a safe and nurturing environment. Sport is one such environment that needs to ensure that this right is not taken away. Unfortunately, there have been many instances where adults who work in youth sport have abused the youths they work with, sometimes even in subtle and unknowing ways.

These instances have also occurred in Singapore, ranging from molestation to hurtful, caustic remarks that hit at the self-esteem of the youth. Indeed, the manner in which training is conducted, if not well-structured according to the youth’s ability and age, can constitute as an abuse to the body.

While there are existing rules and regulations to help govern adult sport development in Singapore, these may not address the specific needs of youths. Hence there is a need to develop an awareness around youth sport, to cultivate a safe, positive and non-threatening environment with the interests of youths at the centre of all decisions and activities.
